July ’26 : A new member of the household

The reason of the upcoming move to a new house in the same street was the impending expansion of the family Escher… Jetta was pregnant.

So on the 23rd of July 1926 Maurits en Jetta welcomed their first child, a son named George Arnold.

Escher later wrote his parents :

He is an adorable, sweet, and beautiful child, absolutely no mongrel.

Also, about the baptism he mockingly wrote to a his friend Roosje Ingen Housz :

Upon arrival, we found King Victor Emanuel and Mussolini patiently waiting on the stairs, and the Fascist band of Monte Verde played the Dutch national anthem. Furthermore, there were a handful of cardinals and choirboys swinging incense.
