June ’26 : A new house.

The first major exhibition in Rome, Escher’s new city of residence, was over but there was no time to rest yet.

After settling in a new house on the Via Alessandro Poerio in Rome, Escher and Jetta quickly realized that the building was too small. Jetta was pregnant and Escher didn’t have his own studio to work in. In June 1926, they also bought another house in the same street, number 94. But that was also still a work in progress, so they could not move in until February 1927. The apartment became known as the Casa dei Quattro Venti (“House of the Four Winds”) and included a private studio where Escher would create many works inspired by the Italian landscape. Later it was renumbered to 122.

While he probably did not celebrate it lavishly, there were still a number of important days in June 1926.
On the 12th was the celebration of the 2nd wedding year, the paper wedding. This date was the official civil ceremony, on the 16th was the church dedication. And then Escher also became 28 on the 17th.
