Verbum, lithograph, 1942.
“An evolution from the center outwards, offers more room for mature figures along the edges. The central word ‘Verbum’ recalls the biblical creation story. Triangular primordial figures emerge from misty gray, which, on the edges of the regular hexagon, evolved into birds, fish and frogs, each in their own element: air, water and earth. Each species appears in two conditions: day and night. They flow into each other and move along the circumference of the hexagon , in a clockwise direction.” ~ M.C. Escher, Grafiek en Tekeningen.
